“While we believe that online piracy by foreign websites is a serious problem that requires a serious legislative response, we will not support legislation that reduces freedom of expression, increases cybersecurity risk, or undermines the dynamic, innovative global Internet.”

— The White House, responding this morning to a petition on SOPA and online piracy (via barackobama)

When Life Imitates The Wire of the Day: Baltimore Sun crime reporter Justin Fenton came across an interesting item in the local police blotter. It seems a man bearing the same name as The Wire’s notorious hood Robin Hood, Omar Little, was arrested last night “on a handgun charge.”
Fenton reached out to show runner David Simon, who said the fictional character was not based on a real person, and hence the existence of a law-skirting Baltimorean named Omar Little is “coincidence, completely.”
First Snoop gets busted in a drug raid, and now there’s a real Omar Little roaming the streets of B-more? What next? J.D. Williams is in Hell for the crimes Bodie committed?
Oh, wait.

But I had this idea to shoot it like a fairy tale, essentially Drive took on this fairy tale structure, you know, you have the archetype of the night who roams the wasteland in search of a woman to save. He even has a jacket with a scorpion on as his symbol. And it’s a movie about a man who has difficulty dealing with reality, the Driver character is essentially psychotic but he’s not psychopathic, because he has a lot of empathy and purity, but he’s psychotic in his behaviour; he’s willing to go to great lengths to protect what is pure. He’s almost a man who doesn’t belong in our time anymore. So, the characters became very archetypal.
